Man könnte es kaum passender formulieren als die britische TIMES, wenn man über den portugiesischen Pianisten Júlio Resende spricht. Sein ACT-Debüt „Fado Jazz“ zeigt eine weitere, bisher kaum gehörte Seite des europäischen Jazz: Resende übersetzt den bittersüßen „Blues“, aber auch die hellere Seite der Fado-Musik seiner Heimat, in die Sprache des Jazz. Als wahrer Pionier auf diesem Gebiet ist Resende in Portugal bereits ein etablierter Künstler, füllt klassische Konzertsäle, führt mit seinen Aufnahmen die dortigen Pop-Charts an, arbeitet im Duo mit der klassischen Klavier- Ikone Maria João Pires und hat auf seinem Tribute Album „Amália por Júlio Resende“ mit der Fado-Legende Amália Ro- drigues ein posthumes Duett aufgenommen. Auch ist seine Musik Bestandteil von Serien auf HBO und Netflix.
Die wichtigste spanische Tageszeitung „El Pais“ konstatiert über seine Musik als Leader: „Resendes Umgang mit Fado erinnert an das, was Keith Jarrett mit Jazzstandards macht“ und Alex Dutilh, renommierter Jazzjournalist aus Frankreich, sagt: „Júlio Resende, die neuste Entdeckung der portugiesischen Szene, ist auch die vielversprechendste und spielt auf Augenhöhe mit Pianisten wie Stefano Bollani oder Yaron Herman.“
Und so ist auch Júlio Resendes Sicht auf den Fado aus dem Blickwinkel des Jazz zwar neu, aber absolut logisch. Seine Musik folgt keiner Crossover- Intention, sondern ist ganz natürlicher Teil einer Entwicklung. Er sagt: „Ich weiß nicht, ob das, was ich mache, nun Fado oder Jazz ist. Vielleicht ist es beides. Ich will mich da nicht festlegen, denn wer sich festlegt, hört auf, sich zu entwickeln. Ich bewege mich lieber frei, wie der Klang.“
Fast alle Stücke sind Eigenkompositi-onen Júlio Resendes. Ein weiteres Indiz, dass es ihm nicht um Bearbeitung, sondern um Weiterentwicklung geht.
Und wenn Resende mit seinem Quartet den Opener „Vira Mais Cinco“ spielt, steht das exemplarisch für diesen Ansatz. Da ist diese unwiderstehliche Melodie, der vertraute Klang der Guitarra Portuguesa, jenem Lauten-artigen Instru- ment, das zur traditionellen Fado-Besetzung gehört, und die eine einzigartige Klangfarbe aus Einflüssen Nordafrikas und Südeuropas erzeugt, welche für diese Musik so prägend sind. Aber da sind auch Klavier, Schlagzeug und Kontrabass, kei-neswegs klassische Fado-Charaktere, die aber so klingen und spielen, als hätten sie schon immer und ganz selbstverständ- lich dazu gehört. Und schließlich tänzelt das Stück im ungeraden 5/4 Takt, was ihm einen so ungewöhnlichen, wie organi-schen Dreh verleiht. Es sind diese Verbindungen, die Resendes Musik so neu und interessant, aber zugleich zugänglich und natürlich klingen lassen.
